The Wildlife of Bale Mountains National Park

Wildlife Endemic Species Conservation

Bale Mountains National Park is a biodiversity hotspot with dramatic scenery ranging from volcanic peaks and alpine meadows to lush forests and deep gorges. It's one of the best places in Ethiopia to see endemic wildlife.

Wildlife Highlights

The park is home to the largest population of the endangered Ethiopian wolf, Africa's most endangered carnivore. Other endemic species include the Mountain nyala, Bale monkey, and giant mole rat.

Best Viewing Areas

  • Sanetti Plateau: Best for Ethiopian wolf sightings
  • Harenna Forest: Home to lions, leopards, and Bale monkeys
  • Dinsho: Great for spotting Mountain nyala

This blog perfectly captures the magic of Lalibela. I visited last year and was completely awestruck by the churches. Your description of Bete Giyorgis is spot on!

I appreciate the practical tips about hiring a local guide. Our guide, Abebe, shared so many insights we would have missed otherwise. Great advice about visiting during Timkat too!
